Don't waste your money! This company cheated my 80 year old mother out of $8,000.
American Roof Systems persuaded my then 80 year-old mother to purchase their roof restoration service for $8k, or roughly half the cost of a new roof. They told her it came with a 12 year guarantee and acted like it would last for 20. It lasted at most
3 years. After that, it leaked incessantly, in multiple places. If they had made any visual improvements during their restoration, you could no longer see them after 3 years -- the roof looked old and tired, shakes were cracked and loose and had moss on them,
and you could see holes through the attic. The company was pretty good about coming out to repair the leaks, but every few storms the roof would start to leak again, sometimes in the same area where they patched, sometimes in a different area. For two years
we were constantly calling them during the rainy season to do repairs, and then we got fed up. The roof was still under warranty, it was clear we needed a new roof, and we asked for a partial refund. They balked, of course. Instead they proposed that they
would do a more major restoration service to stop the leaks. They told me they would use new sealing materials that weren't available when they did the service the first time. They assured me the roof would stop leaking. Not wanting the strain and conflict
of taking them to court, I agreed. I even agreed to pitch in $100 for base boards under the shakes that had since rotted and that they said were not covered under the warranty. In return I asked them to guarantee that the roof be leak free for at least another
two years. They assured me it would be. It wasn't. That second repair was in the summer of 2011. In the very first storm of the season that fall, the roof leaked. In multiple places. It continued to leak throughout the entire 2011-2012 rainy season. To their
credit, they actually came out a few times to patch it even though I never paid them the $100 (although note that the roof was still under warranty), but it continued to leak anyway. In the summer of 2012, we got a new roof, which of course is what my mother
should have done in the first place. I think it's all part of this company's business model. They know their roof repairs don't last, but their cost for the patch work for several years is easily covered by their original restoration price, and they know a
lot of people will get fed up with the leaks and get a new roof even before the warranty runs out or will otherwise not use the warranty. They profit, the customer loses out. By the way, the warranty really only covers 6 years. For 6 years after that, you
have to pay half the material and labor costs. Nobody in their right mind would do that. Back in 2011, I contacted three people on yelp who had given the company favorable reviews to see if they were still happy with their restoration. The answer from all
three was basically no. Two of those reviews are below (both are from 2010), one is now gone. One person, after a year, had not had problems but told me he overpaid and regretted not getting a new roof. Another person's home HAD gotten a new roof before the
6 year warranty had expired. The third person, also just a year into his restoration, said he had recently inspected the roof himself and discovered spots where the felt (tar paper) under the shakes was exposed; needless to say, he was not happy about it.
This company is unethical in its sales practices, provides an inferior product that grossly underperforms what it claims, and does not deserve your business. Other companies that perform roof restoration may do better, but if you really need a new roof, as
we did, and if you can at all afford it, you are almost surely best off paying the extra cost and getting a new roof.
